The spring presses against the gray plastic arm (where the arm meets the peeler head), to hold the blade and its facing blade together, until they are pulled apart by the vegetable that is pushed in. Once the vegetable is pushed through, the spring pushes the blade-holding arm back into place so the blade pairs are touching each other again.Made in France
